- Crowley played a leading role in the cleanup
of a major oil spill off the beaches of San
Juan, Puerto Rico
- Scheduled service to the Bahamas from Port
Everglades, Florida began
- Thomas B. Crowley, Jr., was unanimously
elected to the position of Chairman of the
Board, President and CEO following the
passing of his father
- Crowley initiated a multi-year program,
Focus 2000, to revitalize the Crowley
philosophy of "Customers Come
First."
- Crowley formed two joint ventures, Marine
Response Alliance and Clean Pacific to
efficiently provide emergency services
according to the requirements of the Oil
Pollution Act of 1990
- A new technology tractor tug building
program was launched for two 120-foot,
5,500-bhp Protector-class tugs, featuring
Voith Schneider cycloidal propellers
- Crowley won a unique design-build-operate
contract with Alyeska Pipeline Service
Company for two 153-foot, 10,192-bhp tractor
tugs designed for tanker escort and spill
response operations
- Crowley took delivery of six new 140-foot,
10,912 horsepower Prevention and Response
Tugs (PRTs) and deployed them for Alyeska
in Valdez and Prince William Sound
- Crowley added vessels and weekly fixed-day
sailings to both the Northern and Southern
Zones of Central America
- A weekly Intra-Caribbean service was
launched linking Central America with
Colombia, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the
Dominican Republic
- Crowley launched a new, weekly Gulf Express
service linking Houston with Mexico,
Venezuela, Colombia and Panama
- Chile was included as part of an enhanced
service between the U.S. East Coast and West
Coast South America service
- Three new 2,400 TEU capacity CAT-class
container ships were deployed in the East
Coast South America service
- Crowley became one of the first companies of
its kind to launch a web site. Within years,
the site was made interactive so customers
could track their cargo, make bookings,
obtain rate quotes, print Internet bills of
lading in their own offices applications,
etc.
- The Company received ISO 9002 certification
for most of its major locations and
operations around the world
- Crowley sold its South America liner
business and the name Crowley American
Transport to Hamburg Sud. The remaining
liner business was renamed Crowley Liner
Services, Inc.
- Crowley acquired all of the outstanding
shares of Marine Transport Corporation,
which is primarily engaged in the business
of carrying petroleum, petroleum products
and chemicals in specially designed tankers.
Upon its acquisition, Marine Transport
Corporation became a part of Oil and
Chemical Distribution and Transportation
Services and continues to operate under its
existing name
- Crowley sold MTL Petrolink Corp., a
subsidiary of Marine Transport Corporation,
which was engaged in lightering operations
in the U.S. Gulf
- Crowley acquired Miami-based Speed Cargo
Service, a transportation services provider,
adding the company to its growing logistics
operations
- Three new Articulated Tug-Barges were
delivered and deployed for customers on the
U.S. West Coast
